Continuing the dance song theme, here’s another one. The song is ‘You never can tell’ by Chuck Berry and it figures in the movie ‘Pulp fiction’. Of all the dance moves in the history of dance moves that i know of, i love the twist. And the hold-your-nose-sit-down-and-get-up. This video has both.

There are some things that we are naturally so good at; we don’t need to work hard for them. Like say in my case, finding excuses for bunking, bunking, procrastinating, eating chocolates, eating, running from responsibilities, running, making a paper boat etc.

And then there are some things we suck at so bad, even loads of practice and hard work can do little to help. Like say in my case again, attempting to dance, whistling, winking, waking up by self or alarm, eating by self, somersaulting, opening ketchup sachets etc.

So the thing is we continue to do the things in the first list over and over again out of habit and the expertise we don’t want to see go wasted. Nonetheless, probably we shouldn’t give up on the things in the second list altogether. For once the sachet opens, the ketchup tastes pretty good.

Anyway speaking of things i suck at and speaking of dance, here’s one dance song i loved. ‘These boots are made for walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra. Look out for, what do i call it, that awesome weirdness in the video:-) This actually reminds me of a couple more dance songs. May be we can make this the dance song week. More dance posts to follow.

Chipi chipi

Good to see the blog kick started for the year with a blog about why we blog. Let this then be a blog about why we blog what we blog.

Our blog = words + music

And I think words are powerful. Let’s try a little experiment. As you read the following words, notice if you feel the impulse to smile. Did it work? Did you smile immediately upon reading that? If not, that’s okay. Remember, this is just an experiment. We can try it again. This time, feel your lips gently curl up at the corners. You try to fight it, but your mouth seems to have taken on a life of its own. As you continue reading, you can’t help but notice that you are now smiling like a kid who just located a chocolate hidden by his mom.

And I think music is powerful. And more so than words because it is universal. It is possible you don’t understand a word of what you hear and yet it can make you hum, dance, what not. Let’s try another little experiment then. Here’s a Spanish song I heard in the movie “The motorcycle diaries”. Every time you hear the words “chipi chipi”, you’ll feel like throwing your hands in the air and shouting aaaa:-)

Beautiful Ones

We first started writing this blog for two reasons : To share music and to dump what is on our mind. Since I’ve found someone to share all my thoughts with, I have not really blogged.. But I’d really what to do some Advertising for this one!

When you meet new people, along with them comes their invaluable resource of “never-before-heard-of” and “never- would-have-known-of-otherwise” songs(and other things:-).. Well, this is one such song.. Poets of the Fall?? Who are they? Not in my repertoire! However, since I’ve found this, I am completely in awe of its soothing melody and thoughtful lyrics.. Also this song is very effective for a good night’s sleep or a good afternoon’s sleep(if in office:-).. (Look out for the LOTS of OOOing at around 3:30 min)

Long P.S: While writing this I discovered another reason why we started blogging: I love spending my energy thinking up how to say the same thing in different ways,

The Direct Way: I’d like to fly,

The Indirect Way: I Wish I was a Bird,

The Way in which only I understand what I mean and some other people who i explain it to: Condors should not have been extinct!

The big rock candy mountains

Now I am not really sure why I haven’t posted in so long, almost two months. But this two month period has been amazing. Personally too but more significantly for my friend, to whom this post is dedicated.

Personally, it has been about reading more than usual, dreaming weirder dreams, climbing trees I have not climbed before, reaching office even late etc; primarily incremental changes on existing things. May be “above average” is the right word but I’d still go with amazing.

For my friend, it has been about meeting the apple of her eye, getting engaged to the apple , realization of the romantic dream in an almost is-this-really-happening-to-me way, and all the fun side-effects that come from it, turning quarter of a century old, plus throw in a trip to Kolkata, parent’s anniversary and such miscellaneous things that overall ensure a state that’s hard to describe. All of these brand new things in just two months. “Infinitely amazing”. I haven’t even mentioned the drastically reduced frequency of office-going for reasons mentioned above.

So friend, just felt like putting together these individual events into a cumulative and taking it out all at once:-) I am not even envious, this one time:-) May the 2-month period be matched by or progressively improved upon by every forthcoming 2-month period till forever. Wish you the best of the big rock candy mountains.

Puff the Magic Dragon

When everything you have ever dreamt of happens to you, its a symphony. Every moment has numerous songs competing with each other to play out in your head. Each moment is filled with a mixture of emotions: Love & Fear, Happiness & Worry, Clarity & Confusion about how you have Clarity.. As I said it Happens to you and almost feels like its unreal, a movie, happening to someone else.

Its also a time for Creation.. and expeiences.. Normal everyday occurences just happen but you know they are going to be “Legendary” stories:-)

‘I have a dream’ that ‘People are strange’, and ‘Dance with the dead’, and fell asleep to ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’..

Listen to the wind blow

You must’ve come across these questions in quizzes where they show you seemingly unrelated objects and ask you to connect them. I have one such: cow milk and bass guitar. Any guesses? And more often than not, the answers to such questions are quite dumb cause it would generally be a figment of imagination of the q-setter and it can be anything at all in the whole wide world. So this one’s dumb too but anyway.

The answer is, in both cases, you wonder about how the first person must have come up with the idea of using it, the way it is used now. About cow milk, Calvin says it well:

About bass guitar, or a string instrument in general, i wonder who must have thought of keeping a string stretched and plucking it in ways i can’t think of plucking anything else. Percussion is fine. You start hitting anything you find in front of you. Even wind instruments are fine. You blow into a hollow tree branch or something. But a bass guitar always amazes me.

Anyway i go through these cycles where i plan on learning a new musical instrument. The list so far has been (in age order): harmonica, acoustic guitar, piano, flute, tambourine, drums, rubab, electric guitar, and now latest is bass guitar. Listen intently to the bass lines of this song. And tap your foot. And play it as loud as you can.

Baawra mann

Sometimes i find it quite difficult to figure what my ‘feel’ age is (you know, the age you feel, not the age you are).
Sometimes i feel 17.
Sometimes i wonder if i’ve grown up so much that i’ve covered the circle of life once and have come back to being 17.
Sometimes all i want in a day is to eat chocolate.
Sometimes i want to change the way the society works.
Sometimes i sleep till it is past noon.
Sometimes thinking about sleep keeps me from sleeping.
Sometimes i just lie on my mom’s lap.
Sometimes i want to know what love is.
Sometimes i see ‘work’ as a benign can-be-handled-on-the-side thing.
Sometimes i view it as a major distraction keeping me from learning new things and growing into the person i think i am.
Sometimes i run, you know just run, since i cannot fly.
Sometimes i am intrigued by the absurdity of life (and death).
Sometimes i am happy strummin my guitar though it sounds only a bit like music.
Sometimes i strive for perfection in things.
Sometimes i feel i have made this orbit around the earth where i reside and oversee the day to day happening from a distance.
Sometimes i want to go down there in the midst of people, get involved, do something concrete.
Sometimes i feel dreams are real.
Sometimes i wish reality was a mere dream.
Sometimes i take the blue pill.
Sometimes i take the red pill.

Most of the time, i seem torn between these seemingly contradictory statements which ask for one set to be chosen over the other. But then, there’s this friend of mine who always amazes me by having the cake and eating it too. This friend multiplexes between the earth and the orbital world with such finesse, i can do little but admire. Hello friend, keep it up!:) To ‘when september ends’. Cheers.

To Sir, With Love

Eloquent speeches, simple and complicated words fail me when I think about what I want to write about all the people, things and situations that I have taught me.. made me who I am..My Parents and thathas and paatis and friends.. definitely yes.. my teachers have had a gr8 impact on the roots of who I am as a person today.. But life has been my biggest teacher.

I know its a little early for teachers day, but this song brings tears to my eyes.. That soulful voice, the accent, that girl with the one red earring and funky haircut and light eyes(that’s in the movie) , the words and the feeling with which she sings.. What can I give you in return? I gave my heart to my 7th std maths teacher.. I loved physics in high school cause she made it so interesting.. Love you Miss.L.. Muah..

Isn’t it weird how blatantly your description of your “work” can vary based on who you are talking to.

to a colleague in the same team: write those checks which make sure there are enough blah resources for the execution of the blah instructions you are dispatching
to a manager: develop a test plan which includes writing complicated new checks to comprehensively verify the blah feature (see how complex it is? see why i need more time?)
to a colleague in some other team: front-end functional verification, blah project, go wiki for more
to someone in the tech industry: verify microprocessor designs, go google for more
to someone who just about uses a computer: participate in development of the brains of this machine you use.. not exactly just brains.. sort of brains plus skeleton and other organs.. minus the consciousness.. that you need to buy from Microsoft
to someone who you want to get back on (and who made that mistake of asking what exactly it is that you do): you know when you click on that youtube link.. actually, what’s happening is a x86 processor is screaming along at billions of cycles per second to run the kernel which is frantically working through all the OS interface specified abstraction to create the system underlying Windows7, which inturn is straining itself to run firefox and its renderer which creates a flash object which renders dozens of video frames every second.. because you wanted to see a cat jump into a box and fall over.. isn’t it amazing.. so i work on the processor part of the whole thing
to someone who can’t seem to understand what value you add to society: as the 11,368th employee of my company, i contribute to the development of a technology that improves the quality of people’s lives (vision statement of my company) and enhances the digital lifestyle and accelerates global digital inclusion (mission statement of my company). Any more doubts?
to a cat: you see this metal rectangle full of little lights.. i spend most of my life pressing buttons to make the pattern of lights change however i want.. but sometimes, the pattern of lights is all wrong and i try figure how to make it right
